Freestyle Kayaking Skills Series | Episode 2 | Shuvits & Flatspins
Welcome to episode two of our Freestyle Kayaking Skills Series. In this episode, Shuvits & Flatspins, Brandon from Alberta Play Boaters League and AQ Outdoors focuses on core body movements essential for playboating. He demonstrates the "trunk rotation" technique, which is foundational for performing both the shuvit and the flatspin.
We'll guide you through progressive steps, starting in flat water and moving towards achieving these maneuvers on a wave or hole feature. Emphasis is placed on using the core and proper weight shifts while addressing common mistakes. We encourage you to practice these skills in flat water or gentle currents to build a solid foundation for advanced freestyle kayaking tricks.
Stay tuned for episode 3.

2024 NRS Ninja Orbit Fit PFD Review
best PFD money can buy. been a whitewater guide for over a decade and nothing else compares
@@aplomBomb thanks for the view and annecdotal feedback. Very much appreciated..
Thoughts or experience with durability? Wondering between stealth vs odachi
So far as they are new we don't have a load of annecdotal evidence on durability.. mfron a construction and feel standpoint I would say the stealth is likely to be more durable than the Odachi. The Odachi feels more like a specific Creek racing paddle, the stealth is a whitewater paddle for sure.
This is truly the scooters at the skatepark of water sports. Go figure Canadian 😂
Don't you DARE try to teach yourself how to kayak!
Does it interfere with the sun roof opening?
It will depend on the sun roof. If it lifts up then yes it will. If it retracts then there is a good chance it will not .
Another very useful video, thanks! If you have to choose only one between the Astral and NRS, which one do you take?
@@greg.davies thank you for checking out the video and for the kind words. I personally have the NRS vector rescue PFD I find it fits me a little better than the Green jacket. However I did use the green jacket for a number of years and really like that PFD In Canada the vector is quite a lot cheaper than the Green jacket also so that is something to consider north of the border
With the bow and stern straps won't they rub off the paint? My previous setup was using bow and stern rope that seemed to rub the paint off.
@@alleghenywanderer6081 thank you for viewing the video and feel comment. Rubbing the paint off can certainly be a concern. Some ways to mitigate that are positioning the knot and buckles in a spot that is not touching the paint. Another thing we've seen done is essentially using some kind of sleeve around the points that touch the vehicle, fleece, towel, phone or any soft material like that will protect the paint job.
Overpriced just because it’s labeled “fishing” so all the sheep bite at it. When in reality you can buy a star and customize your frame for cheaper and it will be set up way better. Every honest salesman that’s not trying to rip you off will tell you the same thing
Very useful video, thanks!
Great video, thanks! I’m probably going with Icon over Meridien, for the comfort and drier boat of a back zipper. Would you agree?
The icon is our choice over the meridian too. Thanks for watching the video and for checking in.
Will the motion 3 xl fit the 2023 Toyota sequoia?
@@tzxsr it should do. It just depends on the bar spread and the bar type. Do you have factory racks or after market ones like Thule, Yakima etc?
@@AQOutdoors I have the stock factory bar that came with the vehicle . Thanks for the quick response
@@tzxsr the only thing we have seen is that the factory racks sit too low to the vehicle so the box sits on the roof rather than an inch above it. Are you in Calgary or Edmonton or elsewhere?
@@AQOutdoors Texas USA
@tzxsr it would be worth checking with a loxal rack shop to see if it will work on your bars Thanks again for checking out the video and I hope it works for you. They are great roof boxes .
Thanks for that info. What brand/model is the jacket you are wearing? Cheers
@@philcross3371 thanks for checking out the video and for the question. I think it is the Mammut Eiger Free Pro HS gore rwz jacket. It's a couple of years old so has been updated but I love the jacket.
@@AQOutdoors thanks for that. Might have to save a few pennies for that.
Price point?
@@georgewilliamssr5230 thanks for the view and question. $638 for the straight shaft and $760 for the bent shaft in both models.. that is Canadian dollars and excludes tax.
Please explain how an offset forward blade provides more "powerful catch". Don't we want a more powerful *power* phase, with easy catch and release? I understand why canoe or SUP blades are *angled* forwards to provide a stronger power phase. (The reason has to do with the orientation of the shaft and hence blade at the most powerful phase of the power phase.) If anything, shouldn't kayak blades also be *angled* , not *offset* , slightly forward? (Same reason.) Maybe it's a matter of terminology, but i see the new paddles as having the plane of the blade shifted forward of the main axis of the shaft, not bent forward from it.
What size box is on that Santa Fe in the video?
In this video it is the Large.
Awesome. Looking forward to this series!

how has the 35# anchor been working with e139 SLPISTREAM? Mine is impossible to pul;l up even doubled up with the pully
Thanks for the feedback. We haven't seen any problems with ours, however in full transparency we have not used it a whole bunch. I wonder if yours has some sand, gravel or grit Court in the pulley perhaps? We also haven't seen any inquiries from units we've sold with this issue. I imagine it is something that NRS are perhaps aware of? And if that's the case it would be certainly worth bringing it up with them. Thanks again for checking out the video and let us know if we can help in any other way
The Hullavator sits lower which is a plus, but the independent movement of each cradle means I can only place them as far apart at I can spread my arms and maintain the strength to pinch the handle and move the cradles up. I'm 5'4" and I don't have a wide wingspan.. So my 17 foot kayak is supported by cradles that are technically too close together. Still, it works. The MOS Uplift can correct that problem with the crossbar between the cradles that allow the cradles to be further apart than my wingspan, so my kayak is better supported, and the cross bar keeps the cradles steady as you lift and place. But I think the higher profile as a result of J-cradles is a drawback and not necessary. I believe it can be designed to accommodate regular cradles, as the Hullavator does. I also think there's a way to engineer a crossbar onto the Hullavator, removeable, even. I'm working on it...

Guys... thx a loot! Being an instructor and a quite skilled kayaker, even if class 5 is actually out of reach due to age and to less training, it´s perfect to see techniques you use being stripped and split in steps. I have a NRS Pike rigged for fishing, with an anchor system. I've taken it on several Ozark streams without incident. Very durable, stable, easy to get in and out of. I like to sit sideways and let my feet hang in the water. Anchor system is a must, but easy to figure out. I use a Scotty anchor holder, and 8lbs of anchor chain for my anchor. Never have had a problem with fish hooks and punctures. Highly recommend this vessel. No need for a truck.
@@1982ozark thank you for the anecdotal feedback and insight for viewers of this video. Very much appreciated
Where on your kayak do you mount your anchor? I have the kuda and I’m looking into getting an anchor set up
@@JordanSatterly I used a Scotty universal patch, PVC adhesive and mounted the Scotty anchor system on the right front pontoon about a foot back from the front of the kayak. I also purchased a diving reel and used niteize silicone twisty ties to secure the diving reel to the daisy chains to the right of the kayak seat. The diving reel works very well for anchor rope management and has a good locking mechanism. I like having the anchor at the front of the boat because when I drop, it automatically points me up river so I can fish with the current. For anchor rope I used the bright yellow polypropylene you can by anywhere, Walmart, Lowe's etc. about 30' and 1/4" diameter. It's high visibility and waterproof.
Thanks for this comparison, quick and to the point, can’t wait to compare myself.
You are very welcome. Thanks so much for checking out the video and for commenting. Would love to hear what your experience is once you get in both the boats
Almost was scared away by the low views, but that was a bad take… this was a great video and review! I very much appreciate it
Thanks so much for checking out the video and the kind words. Stoked it was valuable..
Awesome explanation! The only problem that I have is finding information about the pry stroke. It's not a stroke I've heard before (being a non-native speaker) and searching for it doesn't give good results, at least not for whitewater kayaking.
Thanks for the kind words and for checking out the video. For the pet stroke, thinkmofnitnas a reverse sweep with your front hand higher than usual. You are then pushing the back of the blade down and then once it sinks start pushing it away from the boat. I hope that helps.
Are the fasteners still plastic that can break easily?
As long as you ensure the mounting feet are not at their complete maximum width in the mounting track, you shouldn't have any issues with the fasteners. When at the limit and not properly centered on the crossbars it is possible to break off a small plastic tab which is just a release mechanism and shouldn't' actually impact the usability of the mounting hardware . Hope that helps!
Thanks for your review. Do you know if the Motion 3 L fits with an Audi Q5 with the original Crossbars? So that the trunk opens completely?
Thanks for checking out the video. Based on the specs it should do. There is sometimes a variance in the measurement guide but I think it should be OK.
Is the material on the Odin the same as on the Emperor? I prefer the front zip but know that the Emperor has the additional cordura reinforcement that I have come to favor on my snow ski clothing. If the breathability is the same I would probably save the $s and buy the Odin.
Thanks for the question and for checking out the video. The Emperor is for sure the beefuest suit that level six makes. I would at that the Odin is for sure a durable and heavy duty feeling suit. It just doesn't have the same reinforcement the Emperor has.
Realistically the Emperor would be the choice if you are really beating up on the suit. Lots of bushwhacking, hard portages etc. Anything short of that I think the Odin is great.
I am 5'10" and weigh 220lbs & have a long "athletic" torso but short athletic legs with a 30" inseam. When I sit in a typical airplane seat my head is normally the same height as a typical 6'2" guy. I am currently trying to decide which size to order. I think I would need an XL but have concerns the legs will be too long. Would appreciate sizing guidance & if AQ accepts returns if the fit isn't right? I am located in North Carolina. Note: I have a XXL Baffin semi-wet top that is a bit large on me but not huge which has me leary of how tight a Large might be.
Thanks again for checking out this video and for the questions.. I think that XL would be the way to go. You are right.. you will have some extra material in the legs but I think it will be better than not enough in the upper body in the large. We for sure accept returns.. thanks and please don't hesitate to reach out.
@@AQOutdoors Thanks for the super quick response. Just had my wife measure my chest and it's 47" so yep, it looks like XL will be the way to go

Paddles need to have a buoyancy spec. How helpful is the buoyancy in setting up rolls?
Thanks for checking the video and the question. It is pretty standard as far as flotation goes for roll setups. Not as good as a foam core but as good as any other laminate fibreglass or carbon paddles.

100% agree on your comments pertaining to pedal drive kayakers. I have an Old Town 120 PDL and the Chinook backing is frustrating with the high kayak seat! Don't get me wrong Chinook is a great PFD, but I'll be getting the Raku next strictly for the backside benefit.

How easy is it to dry and pack them?
It depends on the model a bit but any PVC boat is easy to dry. Just deflate it and put outside our of direct sunlight.. packing is pretty straight forwards. Some of the bags (depending on brand) can be a bit tight but for the most part you deflate them, roll them and put them in the carry bag.
